'Not that informed': Darline Graham bungles Taiwan question

Did you see last night’s debate? It was the only debate in a runoff that will determine South Carolina’s next U.S. senator, and Darline Graham stumbled over a question any Senate candidate should be prepared to answer. Asked whether Taiwan and the South China Sea are “national security issues for the United States, and if so, why or how,” Graham responded, “I’m just going to be honest here. I'm not on national security that I'm not that informed on national security. But I do support the military.” She continued, “My brother was in the Air Force for 33 years. So I will do everything I can to support the military. My dad was in the army. I'm not a polished politician up here. National security is not my thing, not my area of expertise, but I do support the military.” The audience booed, and I understand why.   She has no experience in government or on foreign policy. Her only experience is that she is related to someone who worked in Congress before. Now she’s asking voters to give her a six-year Senate term after being appointed to her brother’s seat following his death. President Trump recommended her as the interim senator, and then endorsed her full-term campaign. The issue here is nepotism. Darline did not inherit her brother’s résumé, but politically, she is being asked to inherit his Senate seat and his legacy.   This is extremely ironic.
