Mark Kelly takes on Trump over USS Abraham Lincoln, boosts Dems
Many Democrats are eying Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) as a potential contender for the 2028 presidential race. But Kelly, who is not up for reelection this year, says his focus is on the midterm elections in November.  Kelly has been spending his time in recent days highlighting that priority, traveling to Kansas, Iowa and Georgia in an effort to boost Democrats, particularly those battling for critical Senate seats. All the while, the Arizona Senator is becoming an increasingly aggressive critic of the Trump administration and MAGA Republicans, a move that is improving his presidential prospects with those in his party.  “The biggest thing you can do in the off cycle is make friends, build a list and build a brand,” said Democratic strategist Steve Schale. “And Kelly is quietly doing all the right things.  “I think Kelly could be the most underrated guy in the field,” Schale said. “He's a leader who has proven he can beat Republicans in a swing state.” Schale added that like Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, whose name has also been bandied about as a promising 2028 presidential candidate, Kelly is “smart to take advantage of the fact Democrats outside of blue states welcome him to help their campaigns.” Kelly this week is spending time in Georgia as part of a three-day swing to campaign for Sen.
