The Electric Reliability Council of Texas , or Ercot, is predicting peak demand will exceed the current record of 91.089 gigawatts each day from Aug. 20 through Aug. 24, topping it by nearly 1 gigawatt later in the period. Power use is expected to soar as temperatures climb as high as 99F (37C) in Houston and 105F in Dallas with heat indexes nearing 110F, prompting homes and businesses to crank up air conditioners.
